Goals that fight your values always lose
The most common reason a goal quietly dies is not laziness — it is misalignment. When a goal pulls against what you actually value, part of you resists it the whole way, and that part usually wins.
A goal to “earn more” set by someone who deeply values time with family will stall, because every step toward it feels like a step away from what matters. The goal was never the problem. The misalignment was.
A quick alignment check
- Name your top 3–5 core values in plain language.
- Write your draft goal next to them.
- Ask: does this goal serve these values, or compete with them?
If it competes, you have two choices: reshape the goal so it honors your values, or accept that you will be fighting yourself for 90 days. Aligned goals feel less like forcing and more like finally giving yourself permission.
Spend real time here. A well-chosen goal is half-achieved before you start.
