Purpose is a direction, not a fixed point

One of the most freeing truths about purpose: it’s allowed to evolve. The person you are at 30 will express purpose differently than at 55, and that’s not inconsistency — it’s growth.

Major transitions — a career shift, an empty nest, a loss, a health change — often reopen the purpose question. That’s not a sign you got it wrong before. It’s a sign life has changed and your expression of purpose gets to change with it.

How to revisit without starting over

  • Your core values usually stay stable; how you live them shifts.
  • Re-run a self-discovery exercise or two after any big change.
  • Ask: given who I am now, how do I want to contribute?

Think of purpose as a compass heading you re-check periodically, not a destination you reach once. Returning to these questions throughout life is a feature, not a failure.
