The scripts you never chose
Much of how you move through life was shaped before you were old enough to consent to it. The messages you absorbed — about worth, safety, what’s allowed — became scripts you still run, often without noticing.
A child praised only for achievement may become an adult who can’t rest. A child who kept the peace may become an adult who can’t say no. These aren’t flaws; they’re old survival strategies that outlived their usefulness.
Why this matters for purpose
- Some of what you call “my ambition” may be an old need for approval.
- Some of what you avoid may be an old fear, not a real limit.
- Seeing the script is the first step to deciding whether to keep it.
This isn’t about blaming anyone. It’s about reclaiming authorship. Once you can see the inherited scripts, you can consciously keep what serves you and gently rewrite what doesn’t.
