Your values are the compass underneath every choice
When you feel conflicted about a decision, it’s usually two values competing — security versus freedom, loyalty versus honesty. Naming your values makes these invisible tensions visible, and visible tensions are solvable.
Most people have never actually written their values down. They absorb them from family and culture and run on them unconsciously, which is exactly why decisions feel murky.
A simple way in
- Recall three moments you felt deeply fulfilled. What value was being honored?
- Recall three moments you felt angry or resentful. What value was being violated?
- Patterns across those moments point straight at your core values.
Once you can name 3–5 values clearly, decisions get easier: you simply ask which option honors them most. Purpose and values are deeply linked — your purpose is usually your top values in action.
