Readiness isn’t one thing

Whether a mid-life career change works comes down to five dimensions — and most people only think about one or two. A weakness in any single dimension can sink the whole effort, which is why you assess all five honestly before leaping.

The five

  • Clarity of direction: can you describe where you’re going in one sentence?
  • Financial runway: how long can you sustain lower or no income?
  • Skills & credibility: can you prove you can do the new work?
  • Network & support: who can open doors and back you up?
  • Mindset & resilience: can you handle being a beginner again?

Score yourself 1–10 on each. Your lowest scores are your project for the coming weeks. A balanced 6-across is safer than a brilliant 9 in one dimension and a 2 in another — one weak spot is a single point of failure.
