Most good changes are pivots, not reinventions
The internet loves dramatic “I left everything and started over” stories. In reality, the most successful mid-life changes are lateral pivots that reuse most of what you already have, applied to work that fits who you’ve become.
A pivot keeps your hard-won experience in play. You’re not throwing away 25 years — you’re redirecting them.
Find your pivot
- Identify the 60–70% of your skills that transfer to the new direction.
- Look for adjacent roles that value your background, not entry-level restarts.
- Position your experience as an asset the new field lacks, not baggage.
The new career often looks a lot like the old one — with the parts that were slowly draining you removed, and new parts that fit added. Less dramatic than a total reinvention, and far more likely to actually work.
