Most mid-life moves happen through a warm door

Cold applications at 50 are brutal. Nearly every successful career change involves a door opened by someone the person already knew, or one connection away. Your network is your biggest transition asset — if you use it well.

Using it “well” doesn’t mean spamming everyone that you’re job hunting. It means thoughtful, genuine conversations — and you don’t need to be an extrovert to do it.

Network with intention

  • Start with informational conversations, not asks: “I’d love to understand your world.”
  • Reconnect with dormant ties — old colleagues are often the most helpful.
  • Be specific about your direction so people know how to help.

Quality beats quantity, which is good news for introverts. A handful of real, warm conversations will do more than a hundred cold applications. Give before you ask, and ask clearly when the time comes.
