The dimension people underestimate most

A career change at 50 almost always involves a period of lower or interrupted income. The single biggest predictor of whether people can see a transition through is honest financial runway — how long you can sustain the change before it must pay off.

Map it clearly

  • Calculate your real monthly essentials — the true floor, not your current spending.
  • Count your runway: savings plus any transition income, divided by that floor.
  • Research what the new direction actually pays in your market — don’t guess.
  • Have the honest money conversation with your household, with numbers.

A strategic pivot often lets you keep 60–70% of what you already earn by reusing existing skills, rather than starting at the bottom. The more runway and the smaller the income gap, the more freely you can make good decisions instead of panicked ones.
