The predictable traps

Nearly every new manager makes the same handful of mistakes. Knowing them in advance won’t make you immune, but it’ll help you catch yourself faster.

Watch for these

  • Micromanaging: staying too involved because letting go feels risky. It signals distrust and burns you out.
  • Staying a doer: hiding in the work you’re good at instead of leading.
  • Avoiding hard conversations: letting small issues grow into big ones.
  • Trying to be liked: prioritizing approval over clarity and fairness.
  • Going it alone: not asking for help or a mentor.

Micromanaging is the most common and most damaging. The shift is from controlling how to agreeing on what and by when, then trusting your people to deliver. Trust given well is almost always repaid.
