Trust is the foundation under everything

Without trust, nothing else works — feedback feels like attack, delegation feels like dumping, and people hide problems until they explode. With trust, a team can be honest, take risks, and perform. As a new manager, building it is job one.

A key part of trust is psychological safety: the shared belief that people won’t be punished for speaking up, admitting mistakes, or asking questions.

Build it deliberately

  • Admit your own mistakes openly — it gives others permission.
  • Respond to bad news with curiosity, not blame.
  • Follow through on commitments; reliability is trust made visible.
  • Defend your team publicly; correct privately.

Trust is built slowly through consistent small actions and lost quickly through a single betrayal. Guard it. A team that trusts you will tell you the truth — which is the only way you’ll actually know what’s going on.
