From catching the critic to answering it
Once you can notice negative self-talk, the next skill is reframing — not pretending the thought is false, but responding with something truer and more useful.
Reframing isn’t “everything is great.” It’s “this is hard and I’ve handled hard things before.” The word and does a lot of work: it holds the difficulty without letting it become the whole story.
Reframes that hold up
- “I failed” → “That attempt didn’t work; here’s what it taught me.”
- “I can’t do this” → “I can’t do this yet.”
- “Everyone will judge me” → “Most people are thinking about themselves, not me.”
Evidence-based affirmations — ones grounded in something real you’ve done — stick far better than generic ones. Keep a short list of reframes you believe, and use them on repeat until they become the default.
