Feeling like a fraud — while being competent

Imposter syndrome is the gap between your real competence and your felt competence. It hits capable people hardest, often right after a promotion or a new challenge. The feeling lies: it tells you you’re the only one faking it.

The cruel twist is that it doesn’t respond to achievement. You hit the goal, briefly feel okay, then raise the bar and feel fraudulent again. You can’t out-achieve it; you have to work with it directly.

What actually helps

  • Name it out loud — saying “this is imposter syndrome” instantly shrinks it.
  • Keep a “wins file” of concrete evidence to counter the feeling with facts.
  • Talk to peers; you’ll discover the people you admire feel it too.

You don’t need to feel like you belong to act like you belong. Competence and confidence often arrive on different schedules — keep going while the feeling catches up.
