A core part of the job: shielding your people

One of a manager’s real responsibilities is to protect the team from overload — unrealistic demands, constant priority changes, and more work than is sustainable. If you simply pass every pressure straight through, your team burns out and your best people leave.

Protect without lowering standards

  • Push back upward when demands are genuinely unrealistic — with data, not complaints.
  • Protect focus by shielding the team from thrash and constant context-switching.
  • Prioritize ruthlessly; decide what the team won’t do, not just what it will.
  • Address underperformance fairly — carrying it quietly overloads everyone else.

Protecting the team isn’t about being soft — it includes holding people accountable with both compassion and clear standards. Your job is to create conditions where good people can do good work sustainably. Guard those conditions.
