The skill that makes everything else possible

Delegation is how you escape being the bottleneck and create space for actual leadership. Most new managers delegate badly in one of two ways: dumping with no context, or hovering so closely it’s not really delegation at all.

Delegate the right way

  • Be clear on the outcome and the why, then leave the how to them.
  • Match the task to the person’s level — stretch, don’t drown.
  • Agree on check-in points up front so you don’t need to hover.
  • Let them do it their way, even if it’s not your way, as long as it works.

Delegation feels slower at first — teaching takes longer than doing. But it’s an investment: every task you successfully hand off frees you permanently and grows your team. A manager who can’t delegate stays stuck doing an individual contributor’s job with a manager’s title.
