The confidence thief in your pocket
Nothing erodes hard-won confidence faster than comparison, and social media is a comparison machine. You measure your ordinary insides against everyone else’s edited outsides — a contest you’re rigged to lose.
The problem isn’t that you’re weak. It’s that the comparison is fundamentally unfair: highlight reels versus your full, unfiltered reality.
Protect your confidence
- Notice how you feel after scrolling; curate or mute accounts that reliably deflate you.
- Replace comparison with “compare to past you” — are you growing versus last year?
- Remember everyone’s feed is marketing, including the parts that look effortless.
Comparison will always exist; the skill is catching it and redirecting. The only scoreboard that matters is your own progress over time — and that’s the one social media is worst at showing you.
