The voice that undermines you
Most confidence damage is self-inflicted, through an inner voice so familiar you’ve stopped noticing it. “I always mess this up.” “Who am I kidding.” That running commentary shapes how you feel and act far more than any external criticism.
The first step isn’t to silence it — that rarely works. It’s to notice it, catch it in the act, and see it as a voice rather than the truth.
Start catching it
- Name it: “there’s the critic again.” Naming creates distance.
- Check it: would you say this to a friend? If not, it’s distortion, not fact.
- Ask what it’s protecting — the critic usually thinks it’s keeping you safe.
You can’t replace a voice you haven’t noticed. This week, just track it. Awareness alone starts to loosen its grip, and the next lesson gives you what to put in its place.
