The foundations of good sleep

“Sleep hygiene” just means the habits and conditions that support quality sleep. Most are simple, and several can improve your sleep as soon as tonight. They work by aligning your behavior with how sleep naturally operates.

Start with these

  • Keep consistent sleep and wake times, every day.
  • Make your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
  • Reserve the bed for sleep, so your brain links it with rest.
  • Build a wind-down routine that signals the day is ending.
  • Avoid large meals, alcohol, and intense exercise close to bedtime.
  • If you can’t sleep after ~20 minutes, get up and do something calm until drowsy.

You don’t need all of these at once — pick two or three to start, let them become automatic, then add more. Good sleep is mostly the cumulative effect of these small, consistent habits rather than any single trick.
