Motivation always fades — plan for it
Nearly everyone starts strong and loses steam around week two or three. This is completely normal and not a character flaw. The mistake is relying on motivation at all; what carries you through is systems and identity, not feelings.
Keep going when the spark dims
- Shrink the bar on low days — a 10-minute walk still counts and keeps the chain alive.
- Anchor exercise to a fixed time or existing habit so it runs on autopilot.
- Track consistency, not perfection — aim to never miss twice in a row.
- Shift your identity: “I’m someone who moves daily,” not “I’m trying to exercise.”
Expect the dip and it loses its power. The people who stay fit for decades aren’t more motivated than you — they’ve just built systems that keep them going on the days motivation doesn’t show up. Which is most days.
