Relearning signals you were born with
As children we naturally eat when hungry and stop when full. Years of dieting, distraction, and eating by the clock dull those signals. Reconnecting with genuine hunger and fullness is one of the most powerful — and least restrictive — eating skills there is.
Tune back in
- Before eating, pause and rate your hunger honestly, 1 to 10.
- Eat slowly enough that fullness signals have time to arrive (about 20 minutes).
- Check in partway through a meal: am I still hungry, or just finishing the plate?
- Notice emotional hunger — eating to soothe rather than to fuel.
This isn’t about eating less for its own sake; it’s about eating in response to your body rather than habit or emotion. Mindful eating also interrupts the emotional-eating cycle, where food becomes the automatic answer to stress. Gentle awareness, practiced regularly, does more than any rule.
