Know your triggers before they run you

A trigger is a situation that reliably sparks a strong emotional reaction, often out of proportion to the moment. Triggers usually tap into something deeper — an old wound, a core value, an insecurity. Until you know yours, they control you.

Map your triggers

  • Recall recent overreactions — what set them off?
  • Look for patterns: feeling dismissed, criticized, controlled, excluded?
  • Trace each trigger back — what deeper need or fear does it touch?
  • Notice your early warning signs — the body often reacts before the mind catches up.

Once you can see a trigger coming, you gain a choice point you didn’t have before. Instead of being hijacked, you can pause and respond deliberately. Knowing your triggers doesn’t eliminate them, but it turns automatic reactions into conscious responses — which is the heart of emotional self-management.
