The difference between strong and numb

Many people pursue “mental toughness” and accidentally build emotional shutdown instead — suppressing feelings, powering through, never letting anything land. It looks strong from outside, but it’s brittle, and it eventually costs you in health and relationships.

True strength includes the capacity to feel. Suppressed emotions don’t disappear; they resurface as stress, irritability, or burnout.

Build real toughness

  • Allow yourself to feel difficult emotions rather than armoring against them.
  • Distinguish “sitting with discomfort” from “numbing it out.”
  • Build the capacity to stay present in hard moments, not absent from them.

Resilience and emotional openness aren’t opposites — they’re partners. The strongest people are often the ones most willing to feel, because they trust they can handle the feeling. Toughness that requires shutting down isn’t strength; it’s a slow leak. Aim for strong and open.
